Milwaukee, Wis., May 2, 2013— Milwaukee senior living community Eastcastle Place (www.eastcastleplace.com) is proud to announce a perfect Walk Score® rating of 100. This private company provides a large-scale, public access walkability index through its website (www.walkscore.com) and iOS application. The index assigns a numerical walking score to any address in the United States by implementing an algorithm that awards points based on the distance to the closest amenity in each category such as schools, parks, businesses, etc. If the amenity is within .25 miles of the property, the maximum amount of points is assigned.
Eastcastle Place is located on Milwaukee’s East Side, a vibrant neighborhood that is considered to be a cultural and trendsetting center of the city. Bordered by the Milwaukee River and Lake Michigan, the area is abundant with shops, theaters, restaurants, parks and businesses, fueling many residents’ decision to move to ECP.
“A big factor for me when choosing a place to live was selecting a location where I would not have to rely on public transit or someone to drive me if wanted to go to the grocery store, shopping center or hospital on my own,” said Denny Stratte, Eastcastle Place resident. “I love being able to take advantage of this perfect location by walking every day, especially to the gorgeous lakefront. It’s so easy to get to nearby places like Alterra Coffee, VIA Downer, Starbucks and the movie theaters, while getting some great exercise at the same time.”
In a recent study published in the American Heart Association journal Stroke, it was found that seniors who regularly engaged in physical activity reduced their risk of vascular-related dementia by 40 percent and cognitive impairment by 60 percent. Becky Willett, director of community services at Eastcastle Place, says, “The easiest way that our residents can begin to proactively prevent dementia is simply by going for a walk each day. Eastcastle Place is a safe and convenient location for taking daily walks because every necessary amenity is within a quarter of a mile from the community.” An additional study done by AHA also noted that walking briskly can lower your risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes as much as running.
Being self-sufficient and independent, while entering the senior years of one’s life is very important, according to Willett. She adds that by having the ability to walk to many amenities like Veterans Memorial Park, Columbia St. Mary’s hospital and the lakefront, Eastcastle Place residents are able to enjoy the city each day, while reaping the health benefits of daily walks.
“We are very excited to have a perfect 100 Walk Score® and think that it only serves to better illustrate the immense benefits to seniors living in Milwaukee’s East Side at Eastcastle Place,” said Marge Gozdowiak, executive director of Eastcastle Place. “New restaurants and businesses have opened in the area just in time for the summer months, allowing our residents to enjoy their independence as well as the physical and mental health benefits of taking daily walks.”
