Congratulations to the Mequon United U14 Girls Premier team, winning their second consecutive state championship, June 3rd. The State Championship, bringing together the state’s top soccer talent, took place over two weekends in Appleton, Wisconsin.
“As defending champions, you have big targets on your backs” said Cacho Cordoba, Team Coach & Mequon United’s Coaching Director. “Every opponent is working hard to unseat you from the championship position. This is what makes our strong, repeat performance so special.”
While most of the state enjoyed a relaxing Memorial Day holiday weekend, the state’s best soccer teams were competing in round robin tournament play. Mequon’s U14 Girls began their games Saturday against Whitefish Bay, breaking a scoreless tie midway through the first half, Mequon went on to a shutout victory, followed by subsequent shutout victories on Sunday and Monday. At the end of the long weekend, Mequon had advanced to the state semi-finals with 3 wins, 0 losses and a 13-0 goal record!
“The girls seemed really focused and hungry. They were all talking about getting back to the finals and were working well together on the field”, said Debbie Thomsen, team manager and parent of player Izzi Thomsen.
The Mequon United families traveled back to Appleton the following weekend for a semi-final match-up against Brookfield’s Premier team. As expected, this was a tough, physical match which included a significant cross wind that forced changes to coaching tactics. After 20 minutes of a predominant midfield battle, Mequon capitalized on a quick scoring opportunity. Izzi Thomsen sent a cross ball that cleared through Brookfield’s defensive line. Courtney Wiencek timed her run perfectly to pounce on the loose ball and drive it beyond the goalie’s well-attempted save. With 5 minutes gone in the second half, Mequon was attacking again, with Greta Ricigliano in perfect position to drive a cleared ball into the back of the net. Mequon’s advancement to the finals was secured 10 minutes later when Jordan Ellerbrock provided some tremendous ball movement and a great finish for a 3-0 final.
Sunday saw Mequon United matched up against FC Milwaukee, the other deserving finalist. This was the match up many people envisioned, with a lot of the state’s best talent represented amongst the two rosters.
The game started aggressively with both teams attacking offensively, and physical play on both sides. The first real attempt on goal came from FC when a deflected Mequon defensive clearance almost bounced back into the net. Kelli Ausman, Mequon’s goalie, recovered nicely and confidently continued on her quest to preserve her shutout streak.
With 20 minutes gone, Izzi Thomsen broke free on a through ball and was subsequently fouled by FC Milwaukee’s goalie in the box, prompting a penalty kick. Izzi confidently stepped up and sent the ball to the back of the net, breaking the scoreless tie. The score remained 1-0 at half.
The second half continued as the first half started – two tightly matched teams playing a tough, physical game. 15 minutes into the second half, a missed FC defensive clearance enabled Mequon to capitalize again and score their second goal. With a 2 goal advantage, Mequon applied further pressure, attacking and scoring their final goal 5 minutes later to secure their spot as repeat champions with a 3-0 victory. The team went 5-0 throughout the tournament, with an amazing 19 goals for and 0 goals against!
“It was amazing how these girls they stayed focused and driven to work as a team and defend their title. Winning it a second time is always harder to do” said Cacho. “We had new players come onto the team this year, and they quickly adapted and became strong contributors to the team. They helped make us an even stronger team than before.”
