Optimist Club sponsors essay contest for students

Mequon - The Mequon-Thiensville Optimist Club is encouraging area students to contemplate the phrase "How can I help my friends realize their value?" as part of the Optimist International Essay Contest for 2013.

The contest is open to students under age 19 who have not yet graduated from high school or the equivalent. The essay deadline is Feb. 1.

The Optimist Club will judge the essays. The winners of the local competition will receive a monetary award, pin and plaque and will advance to the district level where college scholarships are available for top winners.

New mattress store opens in Mequon

Mequon - Mattress Firm opened its first store in Mequon at 11311 N. Port Washington Road, just in time for the holiday season.

Mattress Firm offers an extensive selection of innerspring and specialty mattresses from national brands as well as locally manufactured brands.

The new store occupies 4,581 square feet and is open seven days a week: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Thursday; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday; and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.
