Whitefish Bay educator honored for innovations

Whitefish Bay High School and chemistry teacher Paula Krukar have been awarded $2,000 by the Wisconsin Retired Educators' Association Foundation.

The check was given to support Whitefish Bay's "Putting the Fun Back into Science" project, which was created in September 2012 to improve student performance in chemistry and physics courses through the use of problem-solving teaching methods.

One of Krukar's projects challenged freshmen chemistry students to create a small car powered by the spring of a mousetrap. Students were given five and a half weeks to build the cars, and then they raced their cars on a five-meter course.

As a result of her new teaching strategy, Krukar said student assessment scores have improved and there have been fewer behavior and attendance issues.

Shorewood students write essays for senior center

Shorewood's promising young writers had the opportunity to show their talent in the Senior Resource Center's annual essay contest.

Sixth-grade students from Atwater and Lake Bluff elementary schools were asked to write on the topics "My Older Friend" or "My Grandparent." Out of the 134 entries received, a panel of senior adult judges selected their favorite essays.

The two winning essayists, Abby Gandrud and Phillip White, will receive a $25 cash prize. Awards will also be given to the honorable mention essayists: Pierson Froelich, Julia Appel, Alexander Grbic and Felicity Hade.

All winners will receive their awards and read their essays joined by their families, friends, teachers and the persons to whom the essays are dedicated at a special intergenerational ceremony and lunch at the Shorewood Village Center on Monday, May 12.
