May 7, 2012

A former apartment manager was arrested for breaking into the Shorewood building where he used to work and allegedly stealing more than $1,000 in electronic equipment, among other items.

According to the police report:

The 39-year-old man, formerly of Shorewood and now homeless, was arrested April 30 for burglary, criminal trespass and criminal damage to property in the 3900 block of North Maryland Avenue that occurred about 3 a.m. April 29.

The man broke into the basement and took 13 sets of keys and then used some of those keys to enter occupied apartments, taking items while telling at least one tenant he was investigating a water leak.

Before the burglary was reported, the man was seen carrying what turned out to be stolen items including a laptop computer and a digital media player valued at more than $1,000.

An officer recorded the serial numbers of the items and sent the man on his way. When the burglaries were reported and the serial numbers matched, the man was found and arrested.
