Department merger working for Nicolet

Oct. 6, 2010

Glendale — Kirk Krychowiak, the director of the Nicolet Recreation Department, wears two hats.

Beginning in the summer of 2009, he took on the duties of the Nicolet High School athletic director, following the retirement of Jim Liska.

"By not replacing Jim and merging the departments, the School Board was able to save money," Krychowiak said. District Administrator Rick Monroe said the merger saved the district about $150,000 in salary and benefits.

Krychowiak said there is no down time for the merged departments.

"It is overwhelming sometimes, because we are never caught up," he said.

There is always activity at the high school, whether it's athletics, clubs, recreation programs or outside groups who rent space for activities.

Krychowiak said the system works because of the cooperation of coaches, custodians and Director of Facilities Brian Reiels.

Nate Brooks, Nicolet assistant recreation director, said there is a priority system, with school functions having highest priority, followed by athletics and recreation activities.

Merged recreation and athletic departments seems to be unique to Nicolet, but early evidence suggests it works.
