Brendan Layde of Shorewood, a 2012 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, will enter Oxford University in the United Kingdom this fall, where he will pursue his master's degree in European and Russian history. As a part of his German studies at UW, he attended the University of Freiburg in 2009. During the second semester of 2011, he served as an intern at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow.

Subia Beg of Fox Point earned a doctorate in law, and Laura Blaser of Mequon a bachelor's degree in international business and Spanish linguistics, from the University of St. Thomas in De Paul, Minn., in May.

Roxanne Kruger of Shorewood earned her bachelor's degree in Spanish cum laude from Carthage College in Kenosha in May.

Sarah Herzog of Glendale earned her bachelor's degree in agriculture, food and environmental science from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls in May.

Sarah Arnold of Glendale and Griffin Humber of Whitefish Bay earned their bachelor's degrees from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, in May.

William Fieweger of Bayside and Kyle Utley of Glendale graduated from DePaul University in Chicago in August.

Kathleen Vecitis of Glendale earned her bachelor's degrees in journalism and mass communication and in graphic design from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, in May.

Stephanie Roberts of Brown Deer made the spring semester dean's list at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.

Emily Scott-Solomon of Whitefish Bay made the spring semester dean's list at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts.

Cam Blegen of Whitefish Bay, a 2012 graduate of Lawrence University in Appleton, earned the school's Charles E. Pond Award for Men, given for all-around athletic ability to a senior involved in two or more sports for sportsmanship, school spirit and scholarship. He lettered in both track and field and soccer during his time at Lawrence; for earning eight or more letters, he also earned the Letterwinner Award presented by the L Club. Blegen also served on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and was an Academic All-Midwest Conference selection.

Zachary Cherny of Mequon spent the summer in Washington, D.C., as an intern working at the nonprofit Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, a hub for Jewish social justice and legislative activity that works to promote economic equality, civil rights and religious liberty, through the Machon Kaplan scholarship-internship program. Cherny is a senior at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he is studying history with a minor in Jewish studies.

Anna Mumm, daughter of James and Sharon Mumm of Glendale, was awarded the Miriam Connellan Mathematics Education Award from Marquette University in Milwaukee. Mumm graduated in May with a bachelor of science in mathematics and elementary education.


Jessie Bazan of Whitefish Bay was one of 10 students from Marquette University in Milwaukee to attend the National Jesuit Student Leadership Conference at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., in July. Bazan, pursuing a degree in communication studies, is a student leader involved in the Marquette University Campus Ministry.


Demone Allen of Glendale, a 2012 graduate of Rufus King International Baccalaureate High School in Milwaukee, was awarded the $3,000 Transfer Concordia Opportunity Grant to attend Concordia University, St. Paul, in Minnesota in fall 2012.


Mark Levine of Mequon, the assistant director of Financial Aid at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, recently received the Wisconsin Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators' 2012 Special Recognition Award for the design and implementation of the annual WASFAA Institute for new financial aid administrators. He served as president of WASFAA during the 2010-11 academic year.
