James Patrick Brennan

James Patrick Brennan of Whitefish Bay died June 16, 2009, at age 79.

Jim was born July 23, 1929, in Shorewood, the fourth of five sons of Edward and Sabina (nee Manion) Brennan. He graduated from Shorewood High School and attended Marquette University before joining the U.S. Navy as a pilot in 1950. He rose to the rank of lieutenant commander and served as a naval aviator during the Korean War, earning the Air Medal and the China Medal and in his lifetime collected more than 3,500 hours of flight time.

He returned to Milwaukee and graduated from Marquette University with a bachelor's degree in business administration and Marquette University Law School in 1960. He practiced law in Milwaukee for 48 years, and tried hundreds of cases in state and federal courts around the country with the Giffin Simarski law firm in the 1960s, and with his own firm, Brennan & Collins, since the mid-1970s.

He served as a member of the Board of Governors of the State Bar of Wisconsin, and of the St. Monica's parish council, and he was elected twice to the Whitefish Bay Village Board, where he served for more than four years.

Jim will be remembered for his devotion to his faith, his family and his country, as well as his Irish sense of humor.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Mary Monica (Plashal) Brennan; children, Michael (Emily) Brennan, Meghan (Brennan) O'Callaghan, Brigid Brennan and Patrick (Celeste) Brennan; 10 grandchildren; brothers, Robert (Dorie) Brennan and William (Maggie) Brennan; other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, John (Joanne) Brennan and the Rev. Thomas Brennan.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated June 19 at St. Monica's Catholic Church, Whitefish Bay, with full military honors following the Mass. He will be buried at the Star Lake Cemetery, near his family's vacation home in the Wisconsin Northwoods.

The family thanks Vitas Hospice for their special loving care of Jim throughout this last year.
