The Great Coming Together

America, blessing. privilege, citizens, Divine, elections, God, govern, voting, world

“Rise and fall of a nation rests with every one of its citizens” ~ Chinese ProverbTuesday we elect a new president and a new theme for our great country.  We come together and cast our vote.  A new day will dawn on Wednesday.  We will have new hopes and new dreams.  What a privilege and a blessing it is to cast a vote and have a voice.  Many countries do not allow for this.  Ronald Reagan rightly said, I believe with all my heart that standing up for America means standing up for the God who has so blessed our land. We need God's help to guide our nation through stormy seas. But we can't expect Him to protect America in a crisis if we just leave Him over on the shelf in our day-to-day living. This nation was founded on a strong belief in the Divine.  George Washington said, “It is impossible to rightly govern a nation without God and the Bible.”  I believe this.  I see a nation that has been blessed by God regardless of its sins in many forms including corruption and missteps.   When the United States of America came into being, I believe God was sending a message to all nations that a country founded on Divine precepts will prosper.  We have prospered, and it took much less time than many nations before us.  We are THE world power!  Other nations look to us for how we do it!  Many want to model themselves after us.  How do we do this, because a great nation does not happen by accident!  A quote by Confucius speaks volumes to each one of us: To put the world in order, we must first put the nation in order; to put the nation in order, we must put the family in order; to put the family in order, we must cultivate our personal life; and to cultivate our personal life, we must first set our hearts right.  The buck really does stop right here, in each of us first and foremost.  I encourage you to consider the Divine as you cast your vote.  What would the one who created you and loves you desire you to do?  That is what we must do, and the answer may be different for each of us.  Once our chosen candidates win or lose, we could remember to pray for our great country, that our leaders be guided by God as they represent America and its citizens (us).  Let us remember to pray for our leaders every day.  Indeed, prayer is our most powerful tool.  I have been saddened, again, by the election ads.  “There is one category of advertising which is totally controlled and flagrantly dishonest: the television commercials for candidates in Presidential elections” (David Ogilvy).  Someday I would like someone to intelligently tell the world (not just the good citizens of America) why we allow our candidates to smear one another.  It tells us nothing of what they stand for but speaks volumes as to their abilities to bully and slander and lie and mislead us.  When we allow this type of campaigning, it also tells the world we will allow propaganda.  I suppose you may not like that word, but is that not what it is?  When I hear negative campaign ads, I assume the candidate doing the smearing has nothing to offer except bullying.  Funny thing is, most of us know that is not a smart thing to do, but come election time, we allow it!  Sometimes I just have to shake my head in disbelief because we want our country’s leaders to act mature, yet the ads they put out there tell us otherwise.  Lastly, there may be long lines tomorrow.  When (and if) you find yourself standing in line to vote, it is a good time to get to know your neighbors and turn strangers into friends.  By Wednesday, all of this hullabaloo will be over.  And whether our candidate wins or loses, remember what Imelda Marcos once said, “Wine or lose, we go shopping after the election.” Your Faith Companion, Cindy
