Edward Snowden vs. Russ Feingold

The Fun House we call American Politics just added a new mirror.  Just when one thinks American politics couldn't get any dumber or more mixed up, along comes a topper.  This time the "holier-than-thou" persona has been assumed by liberals and progressives.  These "purists" are labeling Edward Snowden a hero. Huh?

Where the hell have all these progressives and liberals been?  Where were they when U.S. Senator Russ Feingold stood alone in the Senate and voted against the U.S.A. Patriot Act.  That, folks, is a hero.  Feingold was rewarded for his heroic action by being voted out of office.

The Patriot Act is the sneaky concoction dreamed up by the sinister cabal of "leaders" under President George W. Bush.  Smarmy Dick Cheney is its personification.  This group brewed up the Patriot Act when the nation was on edge about terrorism in the U.S.  Some people saw all sorts of evil people coming to our shores to kill as many Americans as possible.  All this, of course, was a bonanza for American war corporations and their right-wing zealots and puppets.  The profits that resulted from our zany reactions were astronomical.  It was a glorious time to be in the war business.  Cheney's Halliburton was Exhibit A.

Out of the actions of these war-for-profit actions came not only the Patriot Act, but the invasion of Iraq, torture by America, Gitmo,  passage of legislation that created armaments without funding and blew up the federal budget, and a whole host of things that were counter to what we had perceived as "the American way" of democracy and justice.  We became a pariah in the world.  Our moral leadership was blown to smithereens.

Snooping on Americans via the Patriot Act was considered protection from the horde of terrorists ready to blow up America.  One U.S. Senator, Russ Feingold, saw through the card game of the war profiteers.  He voted against the Patriot Act, and did so alone.  His patriotism was called into question.  But Feingold has turned out to be the best of America, and he alone acted on principle.

Frankly, I don't give a damn what happens to Edward Snowden.  It is George W. Bush and Dick Cheney who should be standing in the dock, answering for their actions.  America has become so skewed, so greedy, so war-minded, so lacking in principles and morals, so void of ethics that one wonders what it is that we are building here between the oceans.  It gets more and more to look very much like some greedy, fascist dream.
