Oh, it could have been so much worse.  Imagine if the "new" Republican Party had won the White House.  The Party of lies and distortions.  The Party of "legal rape."  The Party of "birthers."  The Party of gay-bashing.  The Party catering to Big Pharma, big insurance, and the horrible mixture of war and corporate wealth.  The Party of special favors for the wealthy.  The Party of Palin, Cheney, Bush, Rove, Dan Quayle, Beck, Linbaugh, Trump.  Imagine what could have happened.  Imagine the Tea Party holding even more control.  Imagine anti-intellectualism being heralded.  Imagine our foreign policy formulated by mythology and special favors.  We were on the brink of this.  Whew!

Now we are again faced with a Republican House of Representatives and a Democratic Senate.

Laughingly, House Speaker Boehner offered that the two Parties have to come together.  His Party's leader in the U.S. Senate [McConnell] had announced that the Number One goal in America was to make Obama a one-term President.  That is what masquerades as bi-partisanship?

Am I celebrating Barack Obama's re-election?  Yes, but only because of the alternative.  It is embarrassing that we get the low level of candidates we do running for President and Vice President.  These offices are for sale.  Billions were spent to un-seat Obama, and we cannot even trace where all that money came from.  Stealth wealth is doing its best to take over our democracy.  It almost succeeded.  It will not sleep until they get it all.  The major political offices, the federal budget, tax breaks for the wealthy, wars for profit, turning our backs on the needy and underserved, and the "other" get demeaned in the process.  This is not some cute little political battle between Republicans and Democrats.  This is a battle for supremacy in America.  The U.S. and the world are held in the balance.

War makes for profits.  Therefore war is good for the American wealth oligarchy.  Sacrificing your sons and daughters is considered simple fodder for profit.  America is not a "house on a hill."  America is fast becoming a successful place for the few...a mansion on the hill.  And you get the drainage.

Wake up, America!  Get involved.  Insist on democracy.  Make your elected officials answer to you, as is inteneded in our Constitution.  America is on the brink of being stolen from you.  Bi-partisanship is not a goal, it is a necessity.  Stop being a stooge.  Stop being duped.  Demand more.  Demand better.

Perhaps Obama's second term will be better than his first.  Perhaps his altruism will come forward.  Perhaps he will be freed a little from political restraints and election considerations.  He is smart enough to do great things for America.  So far he has not delivered.  Call him on it.

On October 31st, a column by Richard Cohen of The Washington Post appeared around the country.  Here is part of what he wrote:

"On the movie screen, Robert F. Kennedy's appeal is obvious: authenticity.  He cared.  He showed it.  People saw that, and cared about him in return.  With Obama, the process is reversed.  It's hard to care about someone who seems not to care in return.  I will vote for him for his good things and I will vote for him to keep Republican vandals from sacking the government.  But after watching Bobby Kennedy, I will vote for Obama with regret.  I wish he was the man I once mistook him for."
