What's the immediate solution?

Published on: 2/6/2011

Our denial of the Shorewood sewer problem over the past 10 years has led to the type of disastrous raw sewage basement backups ever experienced here.

Most of us living in Shorewood were here in 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005 and of course many of us before that. We've known of backups. All of us citizens have known. But we haven't focused on backups during the past 10 years.

Last summer woke us all up. This summer will again bring sewer backups and more raw sewage in our basements. Although not all of us are completely in denial, we still seem to be in a daze as to how to prevent these backups, especially for the coming summers?

We know that the community shall experience raw sewage in our basements this summer and for all summers to come until 2035 unless it never rains again. Not in all basements but in many. What are we doing about it? All of us are responsible. We all need to focus on immediate solutions now.

Our job over the last 6 months and previously should have been to focus on how to prevent backups this coming summer and not in 2035, when most of us will not be here anyway. And what about the summers of 2012 and 2013?

We need professional sewer engineers to help with the immediate work on the short term problem, 2011, while the present guys work on the long term, 2035. There must be plenty private solutions to our problem. Let's work on it.

Some citizens have sought immediate solutions and again we've gone into denial and into a daze. If sump pumps, new laterals and disconnects are the solution, let's work on these solutions and installations now.

We need to stay awake long enough to get us out of the mess coming this summer and for the summer of 2012. We don't need any 100-year, 50-year, 25-year, 10-year solutions as immediately as we need this year's solution.

What we don't want are backups this summer and the next.

Let's start working on the immediate problem now. How do we eliminate backups this summer? MMSD, how do we start?
